A barcode is a visual, machine-readable representation of data. It encodes numbers and text into a precise pattern of parallel lines and varying widths, allowing specialized scanners and software to rapidly read and process the encoded information.

Originally invented to automate supermarket checkout systems, barcodes have become ubiquitous across inventory management, logistics, healthcare, and retail due to their speed, accuracy, and ease of implementation.

Barcodes operate by leveraging the principles of optical scanning and light reflection. A barcode scanner emits a beam of light—often a laser or LED—across the barcode. The dark lines absorb the light, while the white spaces reflect it back to a sensor in the scanner.

The scanner measures the intensity of the reflected light and converts the resulting waveform into a digital signal. This digital signal is then decoded back into the original numbers or text based on the specific symbology (format) used.

Choosing the right barcode format depends on how you intend to use it:

• Retail Sales: If you are selling products in stores, you must use UPC-A (in North America) or EAN-13 (globally). You usually need to register these codes through GS1.
• Internal Business & Inventory: If you are creating barcodes for internal tracking, warehousing, asset management, or custom shipping labels, CODE128 is the best choice because it supports letters and numbers efficiently.
