Unit Converter
Convert between common units of length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time and digital storage with accurate results.
Understanding Unit Conversion
A unit converter is a utility that allows you to easily translate a measurement from one unit into another. Different regions and industries use different measurement systems, making conversion a necessity in science, engineering, cooking, and everyday life.
The world primarily uses two major systems of measurement: the Metric System (International System of Units, SI), which is decimal-based (meters, grams, liters), and the Imperial System (or US Customary units), which includes inches, pounds, and gallons. Accurate conversion bridges the gap between these systems.
Length & Weight Conversions
Length and weight are the most frequently converted properties. Knowing a few standard conversion factors can make estimating much easier.
Common Length Conversions
- Inches to Centimeters: 1 in = 2.54 cm
- Feet to Meters: 1 ft = 0.3048 m
- Miles to Kilometers: 1 mi = 1.609 km
- Meters to Yards: 1 m = 1.09361 yd
Common Weight Conversions
- Kilograms to Pounds: 1 kg = 2.20462 lbs
- Ounces to Grams: 1 oz = 28.3495 g
- Stones to Pounds: 1 st = 14 lbs
- Metric Tons to Kilograms: 1 t = 1000 kg
Temperature Conversions
Unlike length or weight, temperature conversion relies on specific formulas rather than a simple multiplication factor because the scales do not share the same zero point.
Digital Storage Conversions
Converting data storage units (like Megabytes and Gigabytes) can sometimes be confusing due to the difference between binary and decimal systems.
Our converter uses the standard Decimal (Base-10) system, which is adopted by the International System of Units (SI) and used by hard drive and storage manufacturers. In this system, each step up is exactly 1,000 times the previous unit.
- 1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,000 Bytes
- 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,000 KB
- 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,000 MB
- 1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,000 GB
Note: Operating systems like Windows often use the binary system (Base-2), where 1 "Kilobyte" is actually 1,024 Bytes (technically called a Kibibyte or KiB). This is why a 1 TB hard drive appears as ~931 GB in Windows.
Other Common Conversions
Our online unit converter handles complex transformations across various other categories:
- •Area & Volume: Perfect for real estate and construction (square feet to square meters, acres to hectares) or cooking and liquids (liters to gallons, cups to fluid ounces).
- •Speed: Easily convert between kilometers per hour (km/h) and miles per hour (mph) for international travel, or meters per second for physics calculations.
- •Time: Shift between milliseconds, seconds, hours, and standard durations like months and years.
