What Are Hreflang Tags?

Hreflang is a technical HTML attribute used to tell search engines which language you are using on a specific page. More importantly, it specifies which region or country that page is intended for.

In the ecosystem of International SEO, hreflang tags act as a map for Google. They ensure that if a user in France searches for your site, they are served the fr-fr version, while a user in Canada might receive the en-ca version.

Implementation Methods

HTML Header Tags (Most common)

XML Sitemap Integration

ToolNudge supports both methods

Why Hreflang Matters for Your Strategy

Curb Duplicate Content

Prevents search engines from seeing similar pages in the same language but different regions as duplicate.

Global Search Visibility

Ensures your regional versions appear in the localized SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

Optimal User Experience

Users land on pages with their native language and currency, reducing bounce rates.

Accurate Indexing

Helps bots crawl your entire international structure efficiently and correctly.

Reciprocity Proofing

Ensures all alternate versions point back to each other as required by Google.

Strategic Targetting

Lets you optimize for specific markets without fragmenting your authority.

Hreflang Format & Best Practices

A standard hreflang tag follows this structure: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="[language-country]" href="[url]" />. The language must be in ISO 639-1 format, and the optional region in ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 format.

Use Reciprocal References

Every page in the set MUST point to all others and itself. If the loop is broken, the tags are ignored.

Include x-default

Define a fallback URL for users who don't match any of your targeted language variants.

Use Absolute URLs

Always use full canonical URLs including the protocol (https://), never relative paths.

Valid ISO Codes Only

Mistyping 'uk' for 'gb' (United Kingdom) is a common error that invalidates your tags.

Self-Referencing Tags

A page must always have a hreflang tag that points to its own URL.

Consistent Implementation

Don't mix methods. Choose either HTML tags, Sitemap, or HTTP headers, and stick to it.
